6 Summer Sustainability Tips | Planet Protein Blog

It’s finally summertime! YAY! As you are packing your bag with sunglasses, sunscreen and a plane ticket to a tropical destination, we want to encourage you to find ways to be more sustainable! Here are some ideas that may feel small at first, but can lead to real, big change for you and the planet.

  1. Swap out your sunscreen - You need to protect yourself from the sun, but what should you use? The goal is to stay away from the chemicals oxybenzone and octinoxate. These chemicals make up some of the 14,000 tons of sunscreen passed to the ocean every year. Instead, try out a more eco-conscious brand of sunscreen like THINKSPORT, KOKUA and ALL GOOD. The coral reefs will thank you.

  1. Reusable Water bottle - Hydration is necessary. But disposable water bottles? Not so much. It seems simple, but one person using a reusable water bottle for just one year can eliminate close to 200 plastic water bottles from landfills. Imagine if we all made the swap! We sell a Planet Protein glass bottle, perfect for kickstarting your sustainability journey (or upping your already-sustainable game).

  1. Eco Friendly Sunglasses - No perfect summer fit is complete without a pair of sunglasses! Instead of ordering just any ol’ pair, check out an eco-friendly brand like PROOF, SOLO, WOODZEE, GENUSEE or WEAR PANDA.

  1. Use fans instead of air-conditioners - If you’re anything like us, you love to stay cool in the summer- but at what cost? A simple way to reduce energy usage is to use a fan instead of an a/c unit. Fans can reduce energy usage by up to 90% compared to air conditioners.

  1. Buy some indoor plants - Our team here at planet protein is a huge fan of indoor plants. From birds of paradise to fiddle leaf figs, we have got them all. The cool thing about indoor plants is that they can reduce the temperature of the room they’re in by 10 degrees. Wait, what?? Yup, plants are able to regulate the temperature in the room by adding moisture to the air. As if we needed another reason to buy house plants.

  1. Do a summer sustainable staycation - While everyone is jumping on planes or heading to the ocean in their family vans, we challenge you to do a staycation. Pull out your bike, and ride around your town. Rediscover new places in your city, try new food shops, and get some time tanning on a lawn chair. Not only will you help the environment, you’ll save some cash as well!

While you’re out there saving the world this summer, don’t forget to fuel your world with Vanilla and Chocolate Magic.
