Vegan S’mores! A Cruelty Free Campfire

S’mores… a century old classic

Dating to the early 20’s and first published in Tramping and Trailing with the Girls Scouts in 1929, the s’mores may be even more American than apple pie. The 3 ingredient masterpiece is a timeless treat, at the center of any campfire gathering.

However, the three main components: graham crackersmarshmallows, and melted chocolate, are often loaded with dreadful ingredients in their common store bought varieties.

Let’s identify why your s’more is slowing you down, and how you can lighten the load and enjoy the same great flavor!

Graham Crackers

The outermost layer of our s’more. The big brands will often include:

  • Artificial Flavors
  • Preservatives
  • High Fructose Corn Syrup
  • Cheap Vegetable Oils

Most brands will qualify as plant based, but may include honey from unknown or suspect sources. Try the above alternative instead to start your s’more right! Believe it or not, these common Nabisco grahams might be your safest bet from the store. There are many recipes online to try your hand at it yourself!

Marshmallows

The gooey goodness that brings it all together. The big brands will often include:

  • Gelatin
  • Added Sugar
  • Corn Syrup
  • Blue #1

If you know where gelatin comes from you’ve read enough. Dandies is the most commonly found vegan marshmallow brand. These marshmallows are by no means a health food, but they are a far superior and cruelty free variety to the traditional marshmallows available.

Chocolate Bars

Likely the easiest vegan, cleaner alternative to come across. Keep in mind that the wholesome, strong cacao based dark chocolate may not do the job on the campfire. Most big brands include:

  • High Fructose Corn Syrup
  • Added Sugar
  • Dairy Products
  • Preservatives

For your vegan s’mores, you’ll want a chocolate bar that resembles milk chocolate in its composition, melting easier. Most grocers will have at least a few vegan chocolate options. Depending on where you shop, the abundance can vary.
